- Among 10 to 24 years-olds, homicide is the leading cause of death for African Americans
- 86% of homicide victims were male and 14% were female

- Poor family functioning
- Poor grades in school
- Poverty in the community
- Since 2006, Chicago has been at the top of the Country’s five most populous cities in youth homicides
- During 2009-10 school years, more than 40 Chicago Public School students were killed. Since September 2008, 298 students have been shot, but lived.
- 45.7% of students have witnessed someone being injured or killed in a non-gang incident.
- 32% of high school students reported being in a physical fight in 12 months.
